This months article will attempt to make the case for why, as Americans, we need to insist on the right of all parents, poor or rich, to fairly and freely choose the educational placement for their own students. Ben Scafidi, an educational researcher, helps frame the problem with the following remarks found in a Friedman Foundation newsletter article: Frustrated by the failure of many local public school districts to educate their students adequately, parents, politicians and policymakers are considering alternative systems for the delivery of K12 education in America. American youth, their parents and educators are facing a wide range of social and cultural challenges that add great complexity and uncertainty to the K12 education mission. The implementation of K12 school choice programs in many states is producing a large number of parents who, for a variety of reasons, have transferred their children from public to private schools. The typical American insists on choice in as much of life as possible. We insist on it when it comes to such decisions as the choice of political leaders, the choice of careers, the choice of college and right down to the areas of everyday life, such as food, clothing, restaurants, transportation, residence, TV shows, magazines, service stations, coffees, sodas and on and on. So, it would be safe to conclude that Americans are a choice-driven people. The question is thus begged: given the clear fact that the vast majority of Americans insist on their right to choice in all matters over which they can control, then why is it that in the 21st century, Americans still have no real, free and fair economic choice when it comes to the educational placement of their precious children? The fact is that this is an American freedom that we have so economically degraded along the way that we virtually have taken it away for most parents, especially the poorest families among us. The results: lower achievement, higher dropout rates, increased violence, decline in America's ability to compete in the global marketplace, increased secularization of society and on and on we could go. Do not our hearts and minds tell us there is a better way, a simple, very American way called choice? Clearly, free economic educational choice is much more suited to our historical choice insistence as a culture and people.
